Sunset over SuperDARN
040/366
One of the experiments running at Halley is the SuperDARN radar. The radar consists of the electronics part hosted in one of the yellow cabooses, and sixteen towers with antennae, pointing towards the South. By controlling the amount of power and the type of signal going into each of those antennae in a clever way, the instrument can direct the beam into a number of directions and "look" at various distances away. One of the things that the radar can measure is the wind speeds at various distances from Halley. Through international collaboration, a network of SuperDARN radars has been built where several radars ranges overlap each other, which allows for creating a very detailed 3D image of wind directions and speeds in a given part of the globe. All collaborators share the data freely with each other.
