Sunlit clouds over radars

041/366

In addition to the SuperDARN, the scientists at Halley run another radar - the MF (Medium Frequency) Radar. The instrument looks at winds in the high middle atmosphere (the mesosphere) between 60 and 100km altitude, and measures the strength of the wind. The winds in the mesosphere are driven by a mix of waves driven the Sun, changes in the lower atmosphere and even tides pulled by the moon. The MF Radar is located just to the North of the SuperDARN array and is hosted in its own, dedicated caboose.
