Amongst Emperors

Today we took advantage of good weather and went out to Windy Bay, 35km west of Halley Station, to visit the Emperor Penguins. A trip like that involves 2 hour drive in a SnoCat followed by a 30 meter abseil off the edge of the ice shelf onto the sea ice. The penguins are very inquisitive and come up really close to look at us - all we need to do is just kneel down and sit still.

After having spent a couple of hours with our closest neighbours, it was time to go. First we had to jumar back up the cliff and then get into the SnoCat and drive back home. A lot of effort, but totally worth it!
