Diamond Dust, which creates a host of optical phenomena in conjunction with different sources of light, is created when a temperature inversion occurs, with warmer air above the ground mixing with cold air just at the surface. The temperatures required for the ice crystals to form depend on how clean the air is, and in Antarctica, where the air is crystal clear, Diamond Dust requires temperatures of about -30°C or lower.
