Food Stores

The station, as mentioned a few times before, needs to sustain itself and the whole wintering team for the duration of minimum 9 months of winter, with a good margin of error should the ship not make it next summer, e.g. due to sea ice conditions.

All the food at Halley is stored in a number of locations for redundancy, in case of emergencies and simply because of available storage space. The food supplies we use daily are stored in the food store on the back of the kitchen in the A Module - dry and tinned food on the shelves, fresh food in a walk-in fridge (whose door can be seen just to the left of the image) and frozen food in the walk-in freezer (just outside of the frame, to the left). In addition, some non-perishable food is stored in the Workshop, as well as all kinds of food stored in the emergency containers, on the container line. Finally, there has been a food cache dug out in the snow last summer and some food is stored there as well.
