Servicing experiment in the field

Taking advantage of great weather today (and considering relatively bad forecast for this week), we went out in the field to service one of the GPS stations monitoring the movement of the Brunt Ice Shelf. The task involved getting there on Skidoos, raising it (and digging out battery boxes out of the snow), replacing one of the battery boxes and making a test connection to it from base. Comms in the field in such a remote area can be tricky sometimes, and there are a number of systems used in BAS: VHF and HF radios and satellite phones among them.

In the picture incoming Winter Station Leader and FIeld Guide Al is making a call on the satellite phone to Halley to request a remote connectivity test to the GPS station.
