As Halley is so isolated and so hard to get to throughout the winter, the station needs to be practically self-sufficient. To achieve that goal, each year four members of the Wintering Team are selected to be members of the Search and Rescue (SAR) Team. The SAR Team members receive extra training in rope work, rescue techniques, vehicle use, navigation, etc. In the picture, the team is practicing lashing the load to the Nansen sledge.
