Midwinter Gift for me

174/366

Early in the winter we draw names out of a hat, one name per person, to indicate who we will make midwinter gifts for. This is all kept a secret throughout the first half of the winter, so on the day, it is a surprise for everyone to see who made the present for them. From that point on, over the course of the next three months, every member of the wintering team spends long hours in workshops, labs and other secluded parts of the station, working on their winter gift.

This lamp has been given to me by Phil, our Vehicle Mechanic. It consists of the beautiful wooden base with a red lightbulb inside and a number of layers of perspex shaped like the Halley Main Module. When the lamp is switched on, the red light refracts inside the perspex and lights up the edges, giving a nice glow to the room.

Thanks a lot Phil!
