One of the less often visited places at Halley is the Magnetometer Shaft, which is a location currently just over 12 metres below the snow surface, and which hosts the Fluxgate Magnetometer. The magnetometer is a very precise instrument which measures and records changes in the Earth's magnetic field along the X, Y and Z axes, and which can be used to measure the amount of energy coming from Space and hitting the Earth.
To access the Maggy Shaft, one needs to first walk about 800m east of the Modules towards the EMQA Caboose (after getting work permits approved), and then climb down into the tunnel using ladders mounted to the inside of the wooden walls covering all sides of the shaft. Once on the bottom, a door leads to the long corridor at the end of which are two wooden posts, each with a Fluxgate Magnetometer mounted on top.
