Being as isolated as Halley is, with no access by air, land or sea for over nine months in a year, means the wintering team must be able to solve all their problems without relying on external help. It is why one of the team members is the Doc, who works in a small but very well stocked and equipped surgery. In addition, every member of the wintering team is trained in First Aid, while almost half of the team receive additional training in Advanced First Aid. There are also regular training sessions scheduled throughout the winter to keep everybody's skills sharp.
