This picture of the Little Planet Halley, taken at night, to me is the essence of the experience of wintering in Antarctica. It contains all of the elements one is exposed to during that time: the darkness, fantastic night skies with Milky Way, the aurora, and the base itself.

When I go outside on a clear night like this, I really feel as close to space as I will probably ever be. I can almost reach out and touch the universe. It's an amazing feeling.
